Why Buy a Weather Alert Radio?
An emergency weather radio or public alert radio is an absolutely essential tool if you want to be kept informed of potentially life-threatening emergencies such as thunderstorms, tornados, hurricanes, chemical spills, fires, natural disasters or terrorist attacks.
There are two types of broadcasts that a weather alert radio can receive in the United States: NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and EAS (Emergency Alert System).
The NOAA broadcast is directed by the National Weather Service, a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They broadcast weather forecasts, travel conditions, storm warnings and emergency alerts around the clock.
The EAS broadcast consists of national and local government emergency alerts of issues affecting public health and safety. EAS broadcasts can consist of warnings about weather emergencies such as tornados or earthquakes, toxic chemical spills, radiation disasters and other emergencies that require public notification.
The best type of radio to get is one that features SAME or S.A.M.E. (Specific Area Message Encoding) technology. A SAME weather radio will receive all NOAA and EAS broadcasts which makes then superior to an NOAA weather radio. SAME technology also has the useful feature of allowing you to only receive information for specific counties, rather than for an entire regional broadcast area.
A weather emergency alert radio can immediately alert you to emergency conditions that threaten your home, family, business or farm. For that reason it is an indispensible tool.
